teejayWestern Jamaica has developed a notable reputation for itself, driven by Montego Bay, the island’s second city.

However, aside from the booming tourism industry, youngsters have managed to develop their own music industry, giving birth to several local stars, including Teejay, Rhyme Minister, and Tommy Lee Sparta.

Several western-based acts have managed to nab bookings overseas based on their popularity in the west.

However, despite their relative successes, they are not regarded as commercial without Kingston’s validation.

This has led ambitious acts to head to Kingston in search of the elusive breakthrough.

Teejay has racked up thousands of views online, however, he is still relatively unknown in Kingston.

“Montego Bay is not the only place in Jamaica. We have 13 parishes, so, basically, the highlight from there alone can’t work because if you don’t try to branch out, you will stay in the one area and flop. You have to move up and do things and be dedicated,” he said.

HUGE MARKET

“Kingston has a huge market and if you nah reach out to Kingston is like yu missing. Kingston is the whole package and the media is in Kingston … . From Montego Bay, it’s like you are pushing the water uphill. Even when people in Kingston know about your work, you still need to make an impact in Kingston city,” he added.

Teejay’s manager, Legend, also pleaded with the industry’s media protagonists to be objective with their support of artistes.

“Selectors not playing the songs dem, and we have good music. We break bread, but when you break the bread, if you are not in the dancehall, they still don’t play it. Also to the media, I want to see support for young artistes more regardless if dem bread break or not. Listen the songs and play dem and don’t just watch big names,” he said.
